Mouse House and Shadow Hit the Road to Oz

Expectations on four movies currently in production or development.

WHEELS – A high school road trip comedy from the writers of low-budget horror hit THE LAST EXORCISM and low-budget comedy bomb THE VIRGINITY HIT. Will Ferrell‘s Gary Sanchez Productions will produce for Columbia Pictures.

@ – There is no premise here, only a genre, so the only thing I have to go on is past performance. “Exorcism” was successful but sucked and wasn’t in the same genre they’re going for now. “Virginity” was and was far less successful and even more sucky. They’ll just be pumping this out there with Will Ferrell’s name plastered all over the ads as executive producer and hope that enough fans will rush like lemmings to be disappointed by it.

OZ WARS – Transformation of the Oz narrative with Dorothy caught up in a whirlwind of warrior witches, black magic, marital arts and monsters against a contemporary backdrop. Co-director of TIM BURTON’S CORPSE BRIDE (that would be the one who is not Tim Burton) is directing the feature with CG and stop-motion animation.

@@ – The Wizard has fallen into public domain, so anyone can do anything they want with him. I have nothing against reimagining the Oz story. I’m far more annoyed with stop-motion animation that’s supposed to be dark and twisted and cute all at the same time, and martial arts for no good reason. This doesn’t excite me as much as some of the other Oz remakes coming up.

MAGIC KINGDOM – A family is trapped in Disneyland overnight when all the rides and attractions come to life like the exhibits in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM. Jon Favreau left the IRON MAN franchise to take over work on this, which has been struggling in development for a while.

@@@ – It’s the inevitable next step from turning individual rides like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN into movies. Now it’s the whole park. But who doesn’t have a soft spot for Disneyland? It costs hundreds of dollars to go stand in lines at the real park all day long. Maybe it will be even more magical to sit and watch this less costly version of it unfold on the big screen. Favreau joining the project only increases the chances it won’t be the debacle 2003’s HAUNTED MANSION was.

ME AND MY SHADOW – Shadow Stan, a shadow stuck to Stanley Grubb, the world’s most boring human, breaks the number one rule of the Shadow World — “They lead, we follow,” — and takes control over Grubb. Combination of CG and traditional animation from DreamWorks, scheduled for release in March 2013. Original script by CHICKEN LITTLE writers currently being rewritten by GET SMART writers.

@@@@ – How inventive! Makes TOY STORY seem like such a pedestrian concept by comparison.
