Tigers and Sharks and Clones, Oh My!

From the animal kingdom, looks like we have a big fish, a big cat, and three big copycats. One of these films-in-development is not like a bunch of other movies before it. Can you guess which one I’m most likely to see?

SETUP – A group of friends are catapulted into the middle of a diamond heist that turns deadly. Started shooting in December, with Bruce Willis, Ryan Phillippe and 50 Cent, who is also producing the heist action flick.

@@ – Do they all end up in a warehouse accusing each other of being the rat and calling each other by color-coded nicknames?

EARTH DEFENSE FORCE – Humiliated by a crushing defeat in an alien attack, all the nations of Earth band together to fight off the next, larger attack.

@@ – ID4-2? I sense mostly loud battle sequences and very little character development.

LIFE OF PI – A young boy is cast adrift in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger after it kills three other animals. Starts shooting early this year starring Irrfan Khan (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) and Gerard Depardieu. Based on a 2001 bestselling novel. Ang Lee directs.

@@@@ – Imaginative premise. Very visual. Reminds me of the beautiful first half of THE BLACK STALLION, which I just re-watched recently. This sounds like it will be a touching cinematic experience.

SHARK NIGHT 3DSara Paxton (LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT) and Donal Logue (of the just-canceled FX series “Terriers”) head up a C-list cast as a group of college friends spend a weekend at a lake house terrorized by sharks. Relativity Media says the SNAKES ON A PLANE director David R. Ellis has until the movie’s September 2011 release date to come up with a new title.

@ – So 30 years ago PIRANHA badly ripped off a great shark movie and now the 3D reboot of that piranha movie is spawning a cheesy shark movie imitation? I think more than the title needs to be changed.

Life of Pi has gone through so many directors, let’s hope this one happens and Ang nails it. Never work with children or animals…
