Michael the Moviegoer – @@@@

Anyone who has seen director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s previous films (“Amores Perros,” “21 Grams,” “Babel”) will want to stand in line on opening day for this, despite the nondescript trailer. In fact, the trailers for all his films have failed to truly capture their feature-length magic. A recipe that requires storytelling via creative editing. You simply just can’t cut that down to 2 minutes. Here’s one of those rare directors who hasn’t made a bad film yet. His perfect batting average suggests that “Biutiful” will be another home run. But, oh how I hate that title!!!

Yes, there’s nothing to go on here storywise, but the images do look intriguing and it will be interesting to see how Iñárritu will do his first time out without Guillermo Arriaga, the writer of the death trilogy whom Iñárritu famously snubbed at Cannes. The one line of dialogue in the trailer does suggest Iñárritu isn’t straying far from his usual morbidity but sounds closest to “21 Grams,” the weakest of the trilogy, in my opinion. I’ll most likely give this one a chance anyway.

Michael’s Rebuttal:

Well, if you must rank three great films, I guess one of them will come in at number three. But “21 Grams” is most certainly not a weak film.

“Biutiful” se abre el 29 diciembre de 2010.

Join us tomorrow when we take a look at Jack Black’s retelling of “Gulliver’s Travels.”
