Love and Other Drugs

Terrance the Trailer Trasher – @@

I hope this movie was made by someone more competent than whoever made this incoherent trailer. There might be an interesting movie in there but I can’t find it. The two leads come off as smug. Hathaway spouts a writer’s analysis of Gyllenhaal’s character and we’re supposed to take it at face value that she’s soooooo insightful. I don’t buy that any more than I buy Gyllenhaal’s inane “Lisa” theory at the beginning. Then the reference to the “new sex drug, Viagra” comes in and I’m really confused. Is Viagra the “Drug” referred to in the title? If so, how come it doesn’t seem like it plays that big a role in the story. Or does it? I can’t tell. Looks like a misfire. And the end gag is way too reminiscent of the “Going the Distance” trailer.

Michael the Moviegoer – @@@

I love the “love” part, but was confused by the “drugs” part. Up until the 1:20 mark, I was really digging this trailer. But I agree with you that everything after the Viagra stuff is downhill. Still, Hathaway is so beautiful in this movie that it almost doesn’t matter to me what the story is about. And Gyllenhaal’s opening observation in this trailer is hilarious. I’m betting there’s a lot of great stuff in this movie. I’ll see it. But I don’t get your reference to the end of the “Going The Distance” trailer. Wasn’t that something about eating dinner off a table that was earlier used to have sex on? I don’t see the connection.

Terry’s Rebuttal:

Really, Michael? What did you get on your SAT? Seriously, don’t waste everyone’s time having the obvious spelled out for you. Just go back and watch the trailer yourself.

“Love and Other Drugs” streets November 24, 2010.

Speaking of drugs, tomorrow we’ll look at the trailer for a new ballet thriller from the director of “Requiem for a Dream.”
