The King’s Speech

Michael the Moviegoer – @@@@

The buzz out of Toronto is that Colin Firth will get the Oscar for this. It’s difficult for me to enjoy actors who must perform with a stutter. They always seem to overdo it. But, this being a true story of a historical figure with a speech impediment, I’m willing to be tolerant. The trailer shows that the film will get high marks for cinematography and its gorgeous period production design. But will it be any fun? I’m prepared to find out.

Buzz aside, the trailer looks mildly interesting. And that’s a compliment because the movie is filled with elements that normally bore the shit out of me, like World War II and the British monarchy. The “a-ha” moment in the trailer is when the protagonist, suffering a rather mundane malady, looks up to Hitler. That’s fascinating irony. Enough to earn my respect, but not my dollars, as the rest looks predictable in a genre that is never entertaining to me. To preemptively address your predictable rebuttal, Michael, I’m sure the buzz is right. This is just the kind of role Oscar voters are suckers for. I’m not some mindless automaton who lets them automatically make my movie going decisions for me.

“The King’s Speech” stammers onto screens November 26, 2010.

We’ll be back next week with more trailer reviews, including a Viagra rom-com, a ballet thriller, a Shakespearean odyssey, and a long-delayed release of a prison romance comedy starring Jim Carrey.
