“Independence Day” and “War Of The Worlds” (both versions) are currently on DVD shelves. Why wait for “Skyline” to open when you can rent it right now, under a different title, but in a box with suspiciously similar artwork.

Terrance the Trailer Trasher – @@@

You’d have a point, Michael, if this trailer didn’t make “Independence Day” look like an episode of “The Love Boat.” ID4 and Spielberg’s “War” both sucked, but I never got sucked into their hype. Referencing that Hawking quote, which I hadn’t heard before, shows these filmmakers are taking a different approach. It’s not just that the aliens are hostile; it’s about WHY they’re hostile. And it’s because we would do the same. We’re no better than our enemies. The best science fiction always comments on the politics of its own time. I don’t know if the movie will be anything like the teaser. It could end up being another mockumentary like last year’s overrated “District 9.” But the trailer works for me, and there’s no Will Smith or Tom Cruise trying to upstage the spaceship.

Michael’s Rebuttal:

Well, I had heard the Hawking quote before, so I didn’t give it any additional weight here. But I still feel like I’ve seen this movie too many times before. Nothing in it looks original. I’m over it already without the slightest hint of any motivation to see it. Have fun.

Sightings begin November 12, 2010

We’ll review more trailers next week, including the latest from Paul Haggis and Tony Scott.
