Paranormal Activity 2

Michael the Moviegoer – @

I truly admired the first film. I generally don’t like sequels because rarely does anything original happen in them. This just looks like more of the same, but louder. The first one worked because the frights were generated in a very low-tech way. Now with a bigger budget, we simply get those cliche loud music cue crashes. Makes me wonder if this sequel will play more like a comedy (unintentionally) ala the “Scream” series.

Part one was nothing but a novelty movie to begin with. It had some fun scares if you saw it in a theatre. Everyone I know who waited for the DVD didn’t get what the fuss was about. You’re obviously high, and insulting “Scream,” if you see that drastic a change in this trailer. Considering what a disaster the “Blair Witch” sequel was, it looks like they’re going to try to stick closer to what worked the first time for this one. I’m still not personally interested in watching paint dry again. And you might want to turn off your iTunes when you review these trailers, Michael, because there is no music in this one.

Michael’s Rebuttal:

At 0:15, 0:30 and 0:55 there are huge thunderclaps, for lack of a better description. OK, so it’s not music to your ears, but in my experience these sound effects are generated from synthesizers which are easily defined as musical instruments. Percussion is music, no matter what you think. My point, however, is quite clear. The first movie didn’t have a budget to even rent a synthesizer. The trailer for the second film just suggests it’s the same, only louder.

Opens October 22, 2010.

Coming up next: Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren as retired assassins in the trailer for “RED.”
