The Last Exorcism

Michael the Moviegoer – @@

Let’s hope it really is the last. No exorcist movie in 40 years has come close to being as good as William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece. The trailer does suggest that this film might have a few fun frights. But visually it doesn’t achieve anything fresh or cinematic. At times it looks like a documentary with most of the film taking place in a barn. The slasher-editing style doesn’t help. If the actual film is edited that way, I would walk out. Maybe it’s best just to stick with the first “Exorcist” instead.

Terrance the Trailer Trasher – @@

One thing you’re right about is that the trailer does make it look like there will be some worthwhile moments in this attempt to reinvigorate the exorcism genre. The editing style, I think, actually helps give me some hope, but I fear it’s a false hope. It looks like it’s trying to hide that the entire movie is assembled in Blair Witch/Cloverfield/Quarantine “found footage” mode, a gimmick I’ve never been able to warm up to. At least this looks like it might have more meat to it than those. As for the Friedkin film, as good as it was, it’s a relic of its time. Michael, you sound like you want to declare the subject matter off limits just because it was done very well, once upon a time. Such a silly rule would completely shut Hollywood down.

Michael’s Rebuttal:

Yes, because despite MANY attempts, there has never been a successful follow-up to the original. “Exorcist 2” was embarrassingly bad. Then there were the two prequels released with the same cast and sets, but each made by a different director. Paul Schrader’s version was lost to Renny Harlin’s. It was pathetic. Even Linda Blair’s parody “Repossessed” wasn’t funny. The subject should definitely be retired.

You heard him. If it’s broke, don’t fix it. What do you think of Michael’s edict to ban new exorcism movies? Please leave a comment.

“The Last Exorcism” opens August 27, 2010.

Tomorrow we’ll try our luck with the trailer for “Lottery Ticket” starring Bow Wow.
