Piranha 3D

Terrance the Trailer Trasher – @@@@

Hahahaha! I love this! I’ve never seen the original, or the infamous sequel that launched James Cameron’s directing career. And there’s a reason: I never go for schlock. But this looks like classy, funny schlock! The scary parts look hardcore, but it looks like it doesn’t take itself too seriously, keeping its tongue firmly planted in its jaws with parodic references to “Jaws” (that was actually Richard Dreyfuss!!!!) and that homage to Cameron’s “Aliens” in the final shot of the trailer. Brilliant! It reminds me of the very rare balance of horror and comedy I loved in films like “Final Destination 2” and “Splice” where most people didn’t get that the humor was intentional. And I love seeing Elisbeth Shue in a leading role again. Looks like this will be a really fun time at the movies.

Michael the Moviegoer – @@@

This looks like a lot of stupid fun. You’re right, the humor IS intended and that’s what gives it a license to be stupid. This movie is like the ultimate win-win situation. It’s great if it’s bad, and better if it’s good. I’ve heard that it’s over-the-top bloody, which suggests it’s cartoonish. I’m expecting to have a silly time. Nothing more. But I’m not excited about it being in 3D. I hate 3D. Does every 3rd film in a series need to be in 3D just because the number ‘3’ is part of the title? Wasn’t the 3rd “Jaws” in 3D?

Surfaces August 20, 2010.

Coming up next week, reviews for more trailers, including a “Cloverfield”-style exorcism movie, a teen romcom, and an indie vampire drama.
