Michael the Moviegoer – @@@

This movie looks like it might have some genuine thrills AND intelligence. My kneejerk reaction is that it looks like “Lost” meets “Alien,” which might have been the actual pitch. But it’s been a while since we’ve had a smart sci-fi adventure, and this should be OK while we’re waiting for that long-promised re-make of “Logan’s Run.” It’s a good thing they lingered on Robert Rodriguez’s name up front, giving the trailer a jolt of credibility right from the start. But the actual director’s first name is Nimrod[!] so who knows what to expect.

Terrance the Trailer Trasher – @@

Michael, I can’t tell if you aren’t aware this is a reboot of the 1980s sci-fi action franchise that already had two crossover films with the “Alien” franchise. I would never call the other films in the series “smart.” But I agree, Rodriguez’s name helps sell this new edition. The presence of Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne impresses me even more, although I am getting tired of Alice Braga. While this certainly looks like a version I would have liked a lot better than the Schwarzenegger original, I’m just not enough of a Predator fan to get excited about returning to their world.

Opens this Friday.

Nimrod Antal is a Hungarian director, whose debut feature Kontrol is set entirely in the Budapest subway system: it’s dark and well crafted, definitely worth a look. His sophomore effort was Vacancy, which I rather enjoyed but have no pretense about it being anything other than a solid B-movie good time.
